SOME HISTORY ABOUT ANZIO: |
||
In ancient time Antium was absorbed in the Roman state.
The city hosted Cicero when, returned from exile, he reorganized the remains of its libraries, wishing to find a safe place for them. The most important Romans governors built beautiful villas on the seashore. The emperors of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, and Mecenate visited frequently and had a villa there. Nero and Caligula were born in Antium. The latter founded a colony of veterans in cities and built a new harbor, whose ruins are still visible. In the early twentieth century, Anzio acquired the connotation of an elegant seaside resort destination for a stay of some well known Romans families belonging to the Aristocracy and high Bourgesy. |
